The Advanced Coating Research Center (ACRC) of Ministry of Education of PRC, located at Fudan University, is sponsored and built by the Ministry of Education of PRC in 2001. It is the only one R & D center in paint and coating field in the Universities of China and it is also the first engineering research center of Fudan University. This center mainly aims at developing environment-friendly resins and coatings (water-based, high-solid, powder and UV-cured), high performance and functional coatings by use of new theories, novel technologies, methods and techniques, offering a large numbers of new generation of paint and coating products to push the progress in coatings at home and abroad.
In recent five years, more than 40 research projects were financially supported by National “863” Plan, National Natural Science Foundation of China, Ministry of Education of China, Shanghai government, Jiangsu province, international companies, and domestic enterprises. Many achievements, such as organic-inorganic coatings, transparent heat-shielding coatings, structure color coatings, light-diffuse coating, self-cleaning coatings, (organic, organic-inorganic) microspheres, coating technology for engineering machine, and so on, have been attained and received a lot of attention at home and abroad. Some of the products have been commercialized. ACRC has published more than 150 papers and 45 patents (including 22 patents authorized). ACRC won the National Invention Award of China, the first-class award of the Progress in Science and Technology of Ministry of Education of China, and the first-class award of the Progress in Science and Technology of Shanghai Government, the cultured and civilized work unit in Shanghai education system, and many other awards.
Up to now, many vice-presidents or technical directors from the top-international companies have visited the ACRC, e.g., GE, ICI, Bayer, DuPont, BASF, PPG, Degussa, UCB, Henkel, Mead Westvaco, Merck, Benjamin Moore, Behr, 3M, Essilor, Solvay, some of them have sponsored joint-projects with the ACRC.
The research interests of ACRC include synthesis of novel resins (by emulsion, solution, suspension polymerization method, and etc.), organic-inorganic hybrid coatings, nanocomposite coatings, nanocomposite microspheres, functional coatings (corrosion resistant, anti-fouling, heat-shielding, optical, electrical, smart, self-cleaning, and so on), coating technology.
